Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica protects the Tenorio Volcano and surrounding highland rainforest in the Guanacaste region, and is best known for the Rio Celeste phenomenon. The park conserves cloud forest, primary rainforest and volcanic terrain in a compact protected area.

The standout attraction is the Rio Celeste waterfall and the upstream confluence known as the Teñideros, where mineral chemistry and light scattering create a vivid turquoise-blue river that flows over a cascade into a natural pool. Trails lead visitors through dense forest to viewing platforms at the falls and along the river.

The park also encompasses the forested slopes and crater area of Tenorio Volcano, with hot springs and geothermal features present in lower valleys. The volcanic landscape and biodiversity make it a destination for wildlife viewing, birding and guided hikes.

Tenorio Volcano National Park sits in the northern highlands of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, with the nearest small town commonly used as a gateway being Bijagua; access is by road from regional centers in Guanacaste and Alajuela provinces.

  • Why the water is blue: The river's bright blue color occurs where two tributaries meet and suspended mineral particles scatter light; visual intensity varies with rainfall and river clarity.
  • Trail conditions: Park trails can be muddy and slippery during the wet season; sturdy footwear and rain gear are recommended for hikes to the falls and the summit area.

What to See #

  • Rio Celeste area: The Rio Celeste waterfall and its upstream 'Teñideros' where two clear streams meet producing the river's vivid blue color; the main fall features a dramatic cascade into a natural pool. The route to the falls follows well-maintained forest trails within the park.
  • Volcanic highland and crater: The summit and crater area of Tenorio Volcano, which includes montane forest and viewpoints over the surrounding highlands; volcanic terrain supplies hot springs and geothermal features at lower elevations.
