Temple of Hibis

The Temple of Hibis is an ancient Egyptian temple at the Kharga Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert, notable for its state of preservation and extensive interior reliefs. It dates to the Late Period, around the 6th century BCE, with subsequent work in later periods.

The temple’s interior contains reliefs and painted plaster in relatively good condition for a desert site, including scenes of pharaonic ritual and divine iconography. Its plan includes a hypostyle hall, inner sanctuary spaces and decorated walls that attract study by Egyptologists.

The temple was built during the Saite/late-Pharaonic period and received additions and repairs in Ptolemaic and Roman times, remaining a focal point of local cult practice in antiquity. Modern archaeological work has documented inscriptions and scene programs that illuminate Late Period religion in the oases.

Hibis stands in the Kharga Oasis, in New Valley Governorate of Egypt’s Western Desert, at one of the larger settlements and archaeological zones of the oasis region.
