Thinis

Thinis (ancient Egyptian This) is an early city-state attested in ancient Egyptian king lists and classical sources as the political center of the earliest dynasties in Upper Egypt. It is known chiefly from textual references rather than large, visible ruins.

There are no substantial, universally accepted modern ruins that can be pointed to with certainty as Thinis; the city is important in study of Egypt’s unification and early dynastic period but its exact footprint remains debated among Egyptologists.

Ancient texts identify Thinis as the seat of the so-called Thinite rulers who figure in the origin narratives of pharaonic Egypt; over time the political center shifted to Memphis and other cities and Thinis disappears from later records.
