Temple of Awwam Temple

The Temple of Awwam is a pre-Islamic Sabaean sanctuary near the ancient city of Marib in Yemen, associated with the region’s South Arabian religious traditions. It is one of the major archaeological monuments connected to Sabaean cult practice.

The complex comprises a large walled enclosure with monumental entrances, altars and a concentration of stelae and votive inscriptions that document dedications and rituals. The layout and inscriptions attest to its use as a focus for regional cult observance in the first millennium BCE and later.

Excavations and inscriptions demonstrate the temple’s long use in the Sabaean period and its connections to the political and religious life of the Marib kingdom. The site preserves architectural and epigraphic evidence for Sabaean religion and administration.

Situated near the modern and ancient centre of Marib in Yemen’s highland region, the temple stands within the archaeological landscape of the Sabaean kingdom and is accessible from Marib and its surrounds.
