Temple of Amenhotep IV

The Temple of Amenhotep IV refers to remains within the Karnak temple complex in Luxor connected to Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, also known as Akhenaten, who reigned in the mid-14th century BCE. The structure is significant for its association with the early period of Aten-focused worship.

At Karnak visitors can observe architectural remains and stonework attributed to Amenhotep IV’s building activity amid the larger precincts of the temple complex. The surviving traces are part of the broader material record of religious change during the early 18th Dynasty rather than an intact, freestanding temple.

Amenhotep IV initiated a shift in royal religious policy by emphasizing the sun-disk Aten; he erected structures and modifications within existing temple precincts as part of these reforms. Later rulers altered, dismantled or rededicated some of these constructions, leaving fragmentary remains within Karnak.
