Tempietto Religious Site

The Tempietto is a small circular Renaissance martyrium in the courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio on Rome’s Janiculum hill, designed by Donato Bramante circa 1502. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece of High Renaissance architecture and a study in classical proportions.

The building’s compact, circular plan, Doric and Ionic elements and domed form influenced subsequent Renaissance and Baroque architects. Its scale is deliberately modest, intended as a commemorative shrine rather than a large church.

The Tempietto stands within the monastic courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio and is accessible from the surrounding piazzas and streets of the Janiculum/Trastevere area in Rome.
