Tegallalang
Section of Populated Place Scenic Balinese rice terraces near Ubud
Just north of Ubud, Tegallalang presents stepped Balinese rice terraces, irrigated fields and craft stalls; photographers and culture seekers come for terrace walks, farmer-managed subak irrigation and roadside cafés.
Tegallalang is a cluster of terraced rice paddies and a small village area in Gianyar Regency, north of Ubud on Bali. It is widely known for its stepped rice fields and views over a deep, narrow valley carved by the Ayung River.
The site’s main attractions are the layered rice terraces themselves, which descend along the slope and are crossed by narrow footpaths and small irrigation channels. There are several small lookout points and short walking routes of a few hundred metres to a couple of kilometres that let visitors view the terraces at different angles. Informal tourist facilities include small cafes, craft stalls and photo spots such as swings and rope platforms near the main viewpoint.
The terraces are cultivated and managed through the traditional Balinese subak irrigation system - a community cooperative for water distribution and rice cultivation - which has shaped the landscape for centuries. The area has seen increasing tourism since the late 20th century and many terraces near the main viewpoint have adjacent tourist facilities and entry points.
Tegallalang sits about 10-15 kilometres north of central Ubud in central Bali, on the slopes above the Ayung River valley. The site is accessible by a short drive from Ubud along a winding road; the surrounding landscape is rural and dominated by small farms and coconut and banana groves.
- Visiting tips: Best visited early in the morning for cooler temperatures and smaller crowds; many viewpoints and small cafes line the main ridge.
- Subak system: The terraces are part of Bali's traditional subak irrigation landscape, which is recognised as a UNESCO cultural landscape.
