Tazumal is a major Maya archaeological complex near Chalchuapa in the Santa Ana department of El Salvador, characterized by pyramidal structures and ceremonial architecture. It represents one of the country’s most important pre-Columbian sites.

The complex’s principal feature is a stepped masonry pyramid with exposed construction phases and adjacent foundations that outline a broader ceremonial precinct. Visitors can also see a stone ballcourt and a sequence of terraces and platforms that illustrate long-term occupation and remodeling.

Excavations have recovered carved stones, ceramics and burial contexts that demonstrate Tazumal’s links to wider Mesoamerican traditions. An on-site museum displays selected finds and provides context for the visible ruins.

Tazumal was occupied from the Late Preclassic into the Postclassic periods, with substantial building activity during the Classic era; it shows evidence of continued use and remodeling over many centuries. Archaeological work in the 20th century exposed the pyramid complex and associated ceremonial features.

The site sits in the Chalchuapa area of Santa Ana Department in western El Salvador, within a landscape of low hills and agricultural land and close to the modern town of Chalchuapa and regional roads.

  • Main pyramid height: The main pyramid rises to roughly 23 meters and shows multiple building phases, reflecting long-term Maya occupation and remodeling.
  • Ballcourt and artifacts: The site includes a visible ballcourt and artifacts indicating regional trade and ritual connections across Mesoamerica.
