Tarangire National Park is in northern Tanzania’s Manyara Region and is known for its seasonally concentrated wildlife and dense stands of baobab trees. The park is defined by the Tarangire River, which provides year-round water in a semi-arid landscape and attracts high numbers of elephants and other large mammals.

The park’s mix of riverine floodplain, acacia woodland and open savannah produces strong seasonal contrasts in wildlife distribution. Game-viewing is particularly notable in the dry season when animals gather along the river and around permanent waterholes.

The area was formally protected in the 20th century to safeguard its seasonal migrations and riverine habitats, and its management emphasises habitat protection alongside tourism. Over time the park has become a major northern circuit destination for safari operators.

Tarangire lies inland in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, south of the Rift Valley escarpment and reachable by road from regional towns and safari hubs.

  • Best season: Wildlife concentrates heavily around the Tarangire River during the dry season, typically from about June to November, making that period the most reliable for large mammal sightings.

What to See #

  • Tarangire River floodplain: Tarangire River floodplain forms the seasonal heart of the park and sustains large herds of elephant and other wildlife through the dry months.
  • Baobab and woodland areas: Baobab and acacia woodland covers much of the park, creating the park's distinctive silhouette and providing key shade and browse for animals.
