Taposiris Magna

Taposiris Magna is an archaeological site on the Egyptian Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria, originally established in the Hellenistic period. It preserves the remains of a temple and associated settlement and cemetery from the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.

Surviving features include the temple podium and masonry, fragments of colonnades and foundations, and an adjacent necropolis where burials and funerary architecture have been found. The site is important for studies of Hellenistic cult practice and coastal settlement patterns in the Alexandria hinterland.

The complex was founded during the Hellenistic period and saw use and modification through the Roman era. Excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries have exposed religious structures and burial contexts; interpretations continue and some modern investigators have searched for high-status tombs connected to late Ptolemaic figures.

The site lies on the Egyptian coast about 40 kilometers west of Alexandria, near the town of Abu Qir/Abusir area along the Mediterranean shore.

• Ongoing excavations: Systematic archaeological excavations have been active in recent decades and have focused on the temple precinct and cemetery areas.
• Cleopatra connection (unconfirmed): Local tradition and some investigators have sought links to prominent late Ptolemaic figures, but a tomb of Cleopatra has not been confirmed.
