Park Mountain national park protecting ancient fir forests
In Morocco’s Rif Mountains, Talassemtane National Park preserves fir and cork forests, rugged gorges and hiking routes; visitors come for mountain trails and local villages such as Chefchaouen.
Talassemtane National Park is a protected area in the Rif mountains of northern Morocco, created to conserve the region’s mountain forests and gorges in 2004. It lies within the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region and is one of the principal parks protecting the Rif landscape.
Hiking and short multi-day treks through steep gorges, mixed Mediterranean forests and karst limestone country are the main attractions. The park contains the natural limestone arch known locally as Pont d’Allah (God’s Bridge), several springs and narrow ravines that draw walkers and photographers.
The park was officially designated to protect the Rif’s mountain ecosystems and local water sources; formal protection dates to 2004. Management focuses on conserving native forest remnants and limiting unsustainable grazing and logging.
The park sits in the western Rif, near the town of Chefchaouen and the city of Tetouan in northern Morocco. The terrain is mountainous and rugged, with access typically by road from town centers followed by trails into the core areas.
- Best season: Best visited in spring when mountain streams and seasonal waterfalls are fullest and wildflowers are most abundant.
- Access: Access is usually from the towns of Chefchaouen or Tetouan and many routes require several hours of hiking on unpaved trails.
