Tajik National Park
National Park Vast protected area preserving Pamir mountain ecosystems
Tajik National Park in Gorno-Badakhshan protects Pamir glaciers, alpine meadows and high peaks; visitors come for multi-day treks, wildlife observation and access to Ismoil Somoni and other summits.
Tajik National Park is a large protected area in Gorno-Badakhshan that conserves extensive stretches of the high Pamir mountains, glaciers and alpine lakes. It covers a substantial portion of eastern Tajikistan’s high mountain terrain and protects key ecosystems and water sources.
The park contains high peaks, permanent glacier systems and a range of alpine lakes and valleys; it is significant for biodiversity conservation and for protecting glacial headwaters that feed regional rivers. Visitor access is limited by remoteness and high elevations, so most travel involves organized long-distance routes and multi-day expeditions.
The protected area was established to conserve the high mountain landscapes and traditional land uses of the Pamirs and to regulate activities such as grazing, hunting and mineral extraction within sensitive zones. Management has focused on balancing conservation with local livelihoods and controlled tourism.
Tajik National Park lies across much of the eastern Pamir plateau in Gorno-Badakhshan, incorporating rugged mountain ranges, broad glaciated valleys and high-elevation lakes within Tajikistan’s highland interior.
- Scale and access: Protects a very large area of the eastern Pamirs and conserves high-mountain ecosystems, glaciers and alpine lakes that are important for regional hydrology. Access is remote and requires long-distance travel within Gorno-Badakhshan.
What to See #
- Fedchenko Glacier: A large high-mountain glacier system that is one of the longest non-polar valley glaciers in the world, flowing from high peaks into the Pamir interior.
- Ismoil Somoni Peak: The park includes Ismoil Somoni Peak, the highest summit in Tajikistan at 7,495 metres, and other major high-altitude peaks and glaciers.
How to Get to Tajik National Park #
Access is typically via Khorog (the administrative center of Gorno-Badakhshan) and then by 4x4 into the park’s various valleys. Regional flights land in Khorog from Dushanbe in summer; overland travel is possible but requires permits and experienced drivers.

- Hire local guides for wildlife and alpine-route knowledge; the park is remote and ranger infrastructure is limited.
