Tai O Market Street is the main commercial street in the traditional fishing village of Tai O on Lantau Island in Hong Kong’s Islands District, known for its waterside stilt houses (pang uk) and dried-seafood trade.

The narrow street is lined with stalls and small shops selling dried fish, shrimp paste, local snacks and souvenirs, and there are seafood restaurants and street-food vendors clustered nearby. The stilt-house shoreline and adjacent piers are a focal point for photography and short boat trips. Fresh and dried seafood products and the village atmosphere are the principal draws rather than large museums or galleries.

The settlement is historically a fishing community, long associated with the Tanka people and with buildings adapted to the tidal shoreline; commercial activity around seafood processing and boat-based livelihoods shaped the village layout. Over time tourism has supplemented traditional livelihoods, increasing visitor services and boat excursions from the piers.

The street sits on the western coast of Lantau Island, beside the Tai O tidal channel and village piers, accessible by bus or minibus from Tung Chung and other parts of Lantau and by road from the rest of the Islands District.

• When to go: Early mornings and weekdays are quieter; markets are busiest on weekends and public holidays.
• Boat tours: Boat services nearby run tours that look for the Chinese white dolphin and provide views of the stilt-house waterfront.

Take the MTR to Tung Chung station, then bus 11 to Tai O (about 50 minutes), or the more scenic ferry from Mui Wo. From Tai O bus terminus, the market is a short, flat walk along the main lane.

• Arrive at dawn or late afternoon-midday sun turns the narrow street into an oven and the footfall is heaviest between 11am-3pm.
• Look for dried seafood hung above stalls; it's a local practice for preserving catches and a photographer's favorite detail.
• Buy cash-many stalls are small vendors who do not accept cards. Have small notes ready for bargaining.
