Shoubak Qasabah is a town in Ma’an Governorate in southern Jordan, notable for its nearby medieval castle ruins. The settlement serves as a local administrative and market centre in a mountainous part of the governorate.
A short walk from the town centre leads to the ruins of the Crusader-era fortress commonly called Shoubak or Montreal Castle, which sits on a rocky outcrop above the town and offers views across the surrounding highlands. The site consists of defensive walls, towers and ruined chambers that illustrate medieval fortification architecture.
The fortress above Shoubak was constructed by Crusader forces in the early 12th century and functioned as a frontier stronghold during the Crusader period. Control of the castle changed hands during the later medieval period and it fell into ruin after the medieval era.
The town lies in the highlands of Ma’an Governorate in southern Jordan, perched above the surrounding countryside and serving nearby rural communities.
