How to Get to Tadine#
Tadine is on Maré Island (Loyalty Islands) and is reached almost exclusively by air from Nouméa (domestic flights to Maré Airport). Sea crossings are possible but infrequent - plan and book ahead.
Nouméa La Tontouta International Airport (NOU): The main international airport for New Caledonia, near Nouméa. Domestic flights to Maré (Maré Airport, MEE) are operated by Aircalin and Air Loyauté; flight time to Maré is around 50-70 minutes. From Maré airport it’s 10-20 minutes by road to Tadine.
Maré Airport (MEE): Maré’s airport (often called La Roche/Maré) receives domestic flights from Nouméa. The small aircraft and limited seat numbers mean schedules can be thin - book early in high season.
Train: There is no rail service connecting Maré or other Loyalty Islands to the mainland.
Bus / Road transfer: Public transport on Maré is limited. Taxis and arranged transfers from the airport into Tadine are the practical options; there are a few local minibuses and shared taxis for island travel. Regular ferry services between Nouméa and Maré are limited and tend to be occasional freight/passenger sailings - check local schedules.
How to Get Around Tadine#
Access to Tadine is dominantly by short domestic flights from Nouméa to Maré Airport, followed by a short road transfer. Local buses and ferries exist but are limited, so plan logistics and bookings before you travel.
- Domestic flight (Nouméa ↔ Maré) (moderate-high (domestic fares)) - The quickest and most reliable way to reach Tadine from Nouméa. Flights are short (under 90 minutes) but aircraft are small and seat availability can be limited; book in advance, especially in high season.
- Airport taxi / arranged transfer (moderate) - On arrival at Maré Airport most travellers use taxis or pre‑booked transfers to reach Tadine village. Vehicles and rates are limited - agree the fare in advance.
- Local minibus / shared taxi (low-moderate) - The island has a small number of shared road vehicles for local connections. Services are informal and schedules sparse; useful for short hops if timings match.
- Inter‑island ferry (variable) - Ferries and cargo boats between Nouméa and the Loyalty Islands are not always regular for passengers; crossings are long and schedules can change. Only use if you have confirmed bookings and flexible time.
- Walking - Tadine is a small coastal settlement - the village and shoreline are easy to explore on foot. Bring sun protection and insect repellent for walking outside built areas.
