How to Get to Wé
Wé (Lifou) is reached by a short domestic flight from Nouméa to Lifou Airport (LIF) or occasionally by boat charter. On-island travel is by taxi, rental car or arranged hotel transfer; there is no rail network.
Lifou (LIF): Wé is the main town on Lifou Island in New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands and is served by Lifou Airport (LIF) with scheduled flights from Nouméa (Magenta/Nouméa Magenta is NOU for Aircalin and domestic carriers). From Lifou Airport it is a short drive (typically 10-20 minutes) to Wé town by taxi or local transfer. Nouméa-La Tontouta (NOU): International travellers normally connect via Nouméa; domestic flights to Lifou operate from Nouméa and take under an hour.
Train: There is no rail service on Lifou. Bus / Taxi: Local transport on Lifou is limited to taxis, rental cars, and occasional buses/shuttles arranged by hotels; travel times across the island are short and point-to-point transfers are the norm.
How to Get Around Wé #
Wé (Lifou’s main town) is compact and straightforward to explore on foot. For island travel, rental cars and local taxis are common; public bus services are limited, so plan accordingly. Ferries and inter-island flights connect Lifou with other Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia’s main island; schedules can be seasonal so confirm times ahead of travel.
