Swartkrans is a fossil-bearing cave and archaeological site in Gauteng province, South Africa, notable for its rich deposits of early hominin fossils and stone tools. It is one of the key paleoanthropological sites in the Cradle of Humankind.
The site contains multiple stratified deposits that have produced fossils attributed to robust australopithecines (Paranthropus) and early Homo, together with stone tools and faunal remains. The deposits span a timeframe of roughly 2 million to around 1 million years ago.
Major excavations at Swartkrans began in the 20th century and have been carried out by South African and international researchers; the site has contributed important evidence about hominin variation, behaviour and tool use in the early Pleistocene.

- Age and status: The site is part of the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage area and contains stratified deposits dated roughly between about 2 million and 1 million years ago.
