Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is Bangkok’s main international airport and has a single large passenger terminal building handling domestic and international flights. Before the pandemic it handled around 60 million passengers a year; traffic has since fluctuated while recovery continues. The airport is the primary base for Thai Airways and its regional brands (Thai Smile), with many full-service international carriers operating from the terminal. Many low-cost carriers use Don Mueang instead of Suvarnabhumi.

The facility is organized as one multi-level terminal with separated arrival and departure levels, a central landside area for check-in and ground transport, and extensive airside concourses with gates, shops and lounges.

Terminal Guide for Suvarnabhumi Airport #

Suvarnabhumi uses a single, large terminal building for arrivals and departures; international and domestic flights operate from the same terminal. Check-in, bag drop and major airline transfer desks are on the landside levels while passport control and departure gates are arranged along the airside concourses. Full-service carriers (notably Thai Airways and its group) operate their premium lounges and check-in areas here; many other international airlines also use the terminal. Basic passenger services - restaurants, shops, duty-free, transfer desks and multiple airline lounges - are available throughout the airside areas.

Because the airport is one integrated terminal, most transfers can be done airside without leaving the terminal; landside transfers (for example to nearby airport hotels) use covered walkways, shuttles or short taxi rides.

Getting to and From Suvarnabhumi Airport #

Suvarnabhumi is connected to Bangkok by the Airport Rail Link, airport buses, taxis/ride‑share and road; travel to central Bangkok is typically 25-45 minutes by train and 30-60+ minutes by car depending on traffic.

  • Airport Rail Link (City Line): Connects the airport to Phaya Thai (BTS) and central rail links in ~25-30 minutes; fare is around 45 THB for the City Line. This is usually fastest during peak traffic.
  • Buses & shuttle services: Public and hotel shuttle buses plus airport limousine services operate to major points in the city; schedules vary by route and operator.
  • Taxis: Metered taxis depart from the official ranks on the arrivals level; expect an airport surcharge (≈50 THB) plus tolls and a typical fare of ~300-500 THB to central areas off-peak.
  • Ride-share: Grab operates in Bangkok and can be used to book cars from the airport; pickup points are near the taxi/ride-share zones on the arrivals level.
  • Driving: The airport is roughly 30 km from central Bangkok; drive time is typically 30-60+ minutes depending on traffic and time of day.

Hotels and Layovers at Suvarnabhumi Airport #

There are several hotels directly adjacent to the terminal and a transit hotel inside the terminal for short layovers. The most convenient full-service option is an Accor property linked to the terminal by a covered walkway; day rooms and 24-hour check-in are commonly available. For very short connections, an on-site transit hotel and airside rooms/sleep pods serve overnight and transit passengers.

  • Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport - adjacent to the terminal and connected by a covered walkway; part of Accor. [accor.com]

Tip for long layovers: ask at the transit hotel or airline transfer desk about day rooms; the on-site transit hotel (airside) can be used without passing immigration for some connections.

Tips for Suvarnabhumi Airport #

  • Use the Airport Rail Link (City Line) to avoid rush-hour road traffic - it reaches Phaya Thai (BTS) in about 25-30 minutes and connects you into the city metro network.
  • Take metered taxis from the official rank (do not accept fixed-price offers); expect a 50 THB airport surcharge plus tolls and roughly 300-500 THB total to central Bangkok off-peak.
  • If you have separate tickets and must transfer between Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi, allow at least 3 hours (traffic and a taxi/shuttle between airports can take a long time).
  • Buy local SIM cards at kiosks in the arrivals hall after immigration - the main Thai carriers (AIS, TrueMove, DTAC) have staffed counters with short-term tourist packages.
