Sukharev Tower
Tower 18th-century Moscow tower demolished in Soviet era
Sukharev Tower was a 17th-century Moscow gate-tower notable for its baroque design; although demolished in 1934, its history features in tours of Moscow’s architectural past.
Sukharev Tower was a large late 17th-century tower in central Moscow, historically prominent on the city’s Garden Ring and Sukharevskaya area. The structure was demolished in 1934 and no longer stands on its original site.
The tower itself is not visitable today. Historically it was a recognizable multi-storey, gate-tower structure that dominated the local streetscape; modern visitors note the location in central Moscow where the tower once stood. Any physical visits relate to the surrounding neighbourhood rather than the original structure.
The tower was built in the late 1600s by order of the Russian court and later became associated with civic and educational uses in Moscow. Over the 18th and 19th centuries its role changed several times before its removal in the 20th century.
The former site sits in central Moscow, on the Garden Ring roughly at the Sukharevskaya intersection, within easy reach of central landmarks and the Sukharevskaya metro station.
- Demolition: Removed by Soviet authorities in 1934 during large-scale redevelopment of central Moscow.
- Location today: Site lies in the Sukharevskaya area near the Garden Ring and the Sukharevskaya metro station in central Moscow.
