The Sublime Porte (Ottoman Turkish: Bab-ı Ali) is a historical term used as a metonym for the central government of the Ottoman Empire. The phrase literally means the “High Gate” and referred to the seat and offices of Ottoman administration in Constantinople (now Istanbul).
