Stadacona

Stadacona was an Iroquoian village located on the site of present-day Quebec City on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. It is historically significant as the settlement encountered by Jacques Cartier during his 1535 voyage.

The location is important for its role in early 16th-century contact between Indigenous peoples of the St. Lawrence valley and European explorers. There are no standing ancient structures at the site; its value is archaeological and documentary rather than visible ruins.

Accounts from the 1530s name Stadacona as the dwelling place of a local chief called Donnacona and describe seasonal village life along the river. The community was part of the St. Lawrence Iroquoian cultural group encountered by Cartier.

The site lies within the boundaries of modern Quebec City, in the Old Quebec area on the St. Lawrence Riverfront, integrated into the city’s historic core and accessible from the Old Town pedestrian areas.
