The Citadelle of Quebec is a large 19th-century fortified military installation in Quebec City, Quebec. It is notable as both an active garrison and the official residence used by the Governor General of Canada when in Quebec.

The citadel was built in the first half of the 19th century by British authorities as part of a program of works to strengthen Quebec City’s defenses; construction and later modifications created the present star-like fortified complex. Over time it transitioned from a British garrison to a Canadian Forces base while retaining its ceremonial role and museum functions.

Sited on the elevated Cape Diamond within Old Quebec, the citadel occupies a commanding position above the city and the St. Lawrence River, adjacent to the Plains of Abraham and within the broader walls of historic Quebec City.

• Visitor access: Guided tours are offered to the public, with more extensive access during the summer season.
• Status: Designated a National Historic Site of Canada, it remains an active military installation as well as a museum site.

What to See#

• Governor General’s residence: Contains the official residence used by the Governor General of Canada when they are in Quebec; parts of the citadel still function as an active Canadian Forces base.
• Royal 22e Régiment Museum: Houses the museum of the Royal 22e Régiment, which interprets the military history of the garrison and the regiment.
• Ramparts and bastions: Includes the stone ramparts, bastions and parade ground that form part of Quebec City’s fortified complex and offer views over the Plains of Abraham and the St. Lawrence River.

The Citadelle is a 10-15 minute walk from the Plains of Abraham and the Château Frontenac. From downtown Old Québec, walk up Côte de la Montagne or take a local bus to the Parliament-Dufferin Terrace area. Street parking is limited; public transit or walking is recommended.

• Time a visit to hear the 9:00am Changing of the Guard ceremony, which showcases the Royal 22e Régiment in full dress.
• Combine a Citadel tour with a walk along the Dufferin Terrace and the Plains of Abraham for the fullest sense of Québec's fortified landscape.
• Bring a jacket even in summer - the Citadel sits on a wind-swept hill and the breeze off the St. Lawrence can be cold.
