How to Get to St. Michiel#
St. Michiel (Sint Michiel) on Curaçao is reached through Curaçao International Airport (Hato, CUR) with short road transfers into the Willemstad area. There’s no rail network on the island; buses and shared minibuses are cheap but taxis or a rental car are recommended for convenience.
Curaçao International Airport (Hato) (CUR): Hato (CUR) is the island’s main airport, about 10-20 minutes’ drive from Willemstad and nearby neighbourhoods such as Sint Michiel. Taxis from CUR to the Willemstad area and Sint Michiel generally take 15-25 minutes; expect fares in the range of ANG 25-40 depending on destination and luggage. Car rental desks are available at the terminal.
Train: Curaçao has no passenger rail service.
Bus / Local transport: Public buses and collective minibuses (often called ‘public buses’ or route-based minibusses) serve Willemstad and nearby districts. Fares on local buses are low (a few Netherlands Antillean guilders) and trips from downtown Willemstad to Sint Michiel typically take 10-20 minutes. Taxis are faster and more predictable if you’re on a schedule.
How to Get Around St. Michiel#
Curaçao has no rail network and the island’s hub is Hato Airport (CUR). For Sint Michiel, choose taxis or a rental car for speed and flexibility; public buses are cheap but less predictable.
- Taxi from CUR (ANG 25-40) - Taxis from Curaçao International Airport to Sint Michiel or central Willemstad usually take 15-25 minutes and cost roughly ANG 25-40 depending on exact drop-off and luggage. Agree a fare or use the airport taxi stand pricing.
- Public bus / minibus (ANG 2-5) - Local minibuses and public bus services connect Willemstad with surrounding districts; fares are low (a few guilders) and journeys are short, but services can be informal and stops opportunistic - allow extra time if using buses.
- Car rental (ANG 35-80/day (typical)) - Car rental is a convenient way to explore Curaçao beyond the main towns; agencies operate from the airport. Driving is on the right and distances are short, making a rental practical for day trips to beaches and neighbourhoods.
- Taxi within island (ANG 10-40) - Taxis are the most reliable door-to-door option on Curaçao. Fares vary by distance; short island journeys are commonly ANG 10-30. Many drivers accept cards but carry cash for smaller operators.
- Walking - Parts of Willemstad and nearby coastal areas are pleasant to explore on foot, but Sint Michiel and many beaches are best reached by car or taxi due to distances and limited sidewalks in some stretches.
