Curaçao Synagogue Synagogue

The Mikve Israel-Emanuel synagogue is a historic Jewish house of worship in the Punda district of Willemstad, Curaçao. The congregation dates to 1651 and the current synagogue building was completed in 1732.

The interior is notable for its sand-covered floor and long wooden benches along the walls, characteristic of Sephardic synagogue layouts. Visitors may also see the intricately carved Torah ark and historic ritual objects on display in the adjoining museum buildings.

The congregation was founded by Sephardic Jews who settled on the island in the 17th century; the present building dates to the early 18th century and has been in continuous use as a synagogue since then. Over time the complex grew to include a rabbi’s house and museum that document the community’s history.

The synagogue sits in Willemstad’s historic waterfront district, part of the city center that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is within walking distance of the Handelskade waterfront and other historic Punda streets.

Public transport: Local buses and taxis serve Willemstad from the airport and other parts of the island; once in central Willemstad the synagogue is a short walk from the harbor and the main historic streets.
