Namib & Atlantic Fringe (Namibia, southern Angola)

June brings crisp, cool mornings across the Namib and central highlands with daytime sunshine; desert nights can drop close to freezing in some valleys. The coast remains moderated by the Benguela Current, often foggy, and Etosha is fully into dry-season game-viewing which draws international visitors. Layers and a warm hat for early game drives are sensible; inland dirt tracks are at their best.

Kalahari & Botswana Plains (Botswana, eastern Namibia, parts of South Africa)

June marks the height of the dry, cool season: clear skies, superb game viewing and the Okavango often at or approaching its flood peak, turning large areas into canoe country. Temperatures are mild by day but nights can be very cold around the Kalahari and Delta islands - frost is possible in some spots. Expect higher prices and busier camps; bring warm hats and thermal layers for early starts.

Western Cape & Garden Route (South Africa: Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Hermanus, Knysna)

June is in the heart of the Mediterranean-style wet season - regular fronts from the Atlantic bring cool, rainy days to Cape Town and the Garden Route while the interior gets colder. Whale watching in Hermanus and coastal towns starts to build as southern right whales arrive. Bring good rain gear and waterproof footwear; mountain hikes can be slippery and days are shorter.

Highveld & Drakensberg (South Africa interior: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Lesotho)

June is the heart of the dry, cold season with bright, sunny days and very cold nights; Lesotho’s high passes can receive snow and the Drakensberg often shows snowy caps that attract photographers. Johannesburg’s days are pleasant but mornings are icy - bring a warm coat and gloves for dawn game drives or mountain treks. Road conditions are usually reliable in urban areas.

KwaZulu‑Natal & Southern Mozambique Coast (Durban, St Lucia, Maputo, Eswatini)

June is pleasantly warm along the coast and noticeably drier, with lower humidity and calm seas-perfect for beach holidaying and whale watching further south. Inland reserves are dry and wildlife congregates at permanent waterholes making game drives productive. Early booking for popular coastal lodges is wise as international visitors and local holidaymakers increase.

Zambezi & Victoria Falls Corridor (Zambia, Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, Malawi)

June and July are dry, cool and among the best months for both game viewing and walking at the Falls with markedly reduced spray - the gorge reveals exposed rock and the full extent of the cataracts. Zambia and Zimbabwe parks are especially good for wildlife viewing as animals cluster at remaining water sources. Book ahead for peak-season lodges and bring a warm jacket for brisk mornings.

Madagascar & the Indian Ocean Islands (Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Comoros, Seychelles)

June and July are prime months for exploring Madagascar’s central highlands and western dry forests with cool mornings and warm days, while Réunion’s mountain trails are busy and dramatic with clearer skies. Mauritius and Seychelles enjoy mild, drier weather under southeasterly trades - good conditions for beach and water sports. Bring layered clothing for mountain altitude differences and sun protection for coastal days.
