Country Weather in August

Country High Low Rain UV Feels

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Namib & Atlantic Fringe (Namibia, southern Angola)

By August the desert warms quickly by midday and early-season winds pick up on the coast; fogs still roll in overnight along the shoreline. Wildlife viewing remains excellent as water is scarce and animals are out in the open; this is a top month for photographers. Expect chilly dawns and pack sun protection for powerful midday sun, plus windproof layers near the ocean.

Kalahari & Botswana Plains (Botswana, eastern Namibia, parts of South Africa)

August is dry, sunny and warming by day while mornings stay crisp; water levels often remain high in parts of the Okavango, enabling extended boat safaris. Game viewing is reliable and photography conditions are excellent; camps are busy and conservation fees may be higher. Carry a warm jacket for early starts and sunscreen for strong daytime sun.

Western Cape & Garden Route (South Africa: Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Hermanus, Knysna)

August is often the wettest month with strong Atlantic fronts bringing blustery weather and sudden downpours, but late-winter wildflower displays begin inland in places like Namaqualand by month’s end. Museums and indoor experiences are attractive alternatives when the weather is poor; the shoulder-season advantage is lower accommodation rates. Layers and waterproof shoes are essential.

Highveld & Drakensberg (South Africa interior: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Lesotho)

August warms noticeably during the afternoon hours and you can already feel the approach of spring; night temperatures remain cool, however. Drakensberg trails are less icy and rivers run clearer after winter - great for photographers and climbers. A mix of warm-day clothes and cooler morning layers will serve most needs as conditions swing.

KwaZulu‑Natal & Southern Mozambique Coast (Durban, St Lucia, Maputo, Eswatini)

By August the coast begins to warm slightly and humidity slowly increases toward spring; days are generally sunny with pleasant sea breezes. Wildlife viewing in reserves is excellent as animals are out in the open, and early-season bookings are easier than in peak summer. Bring layered clothing and sun protection for active days along the shoreline.

Zambezi & Victoria Falls Corridor (Zambia, Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, Malawi)

September begins to warm and dust increases as the landscape dries further; water levels are at their seasonal lows, creating unique islands and exposed features in the Zambezi and at the Falls. This is prime time for game drives and river safaris in nearby parks - light cotton clothing for the heat and a hat are advisable. Expect busy tourist attractions, so early starts beat the crowds.

Madagascar & the Indian Ocean Islands (Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Comoros, Seychelles)

September warms noticeably and the east coast begins to show more humidity again; the west and central regions are excellent for wildlife viewing as trails stay dry. Reunion and Mauritius transition toward their warmer season while Seychelles stays relatively stable with lower rainfall. This is a strong month for trekking, cultural visits and marine trips - light, breathable clothing and a rain shell for coastal squalls are sensible.
