Seoul & Northwest (Gyeonggi, Incheon, Yellow Sea coast)

The rains start to build in May; while not yet the monsoon, humidity increases and fleeting downpours become common. Parks like Namsan and Haneul clear of the winter haze and look lush; lotus ponds and rooftop gardens awaken. Daytime warmth can feel very pleasant for wandering markets and hiking short trails, but bring breathable layers and rain protection - mosquitoes begin to reappear near riverbanks as temperatures rise.

Gangwon Province & the Taebaek Mountains (Sokcho, Pyeongchang, Seoraksan)

May is pleasant and often breezy along the eastern shoreline, ideal for hiking Seoraksan’s well-marked routes and exploring the small fishing towns. The air has cleared of the spring yellow dust that affects the west, making vistas excellent; wild azaleas and rhododendrons bloom on ridgelines. Expect increasing domestic visitors on holiday weekends - book ferry and accommodation early for coastal spots like Gangneung.

Central Korea (Chungcheong, Daejeon, Cheongju, Boryeong)

May is often one of the nicest months here: warm but not oppressively humid, with long daylight suitable for cycling along the Geum River or visiting museums in Daejeon. This is before the monsoon arrives, so outdoor festivals and weekend trips to the Yellow Sea coast go ahead smoothly. Expect increasing domestic tourism toward the end of the month - book weekend accommodation in advance if you plan a coastal stay.

Yeongnam / Southeast (Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Gyeongsang)

May is warm and pleasantly humid, great for coastal drives and seafood markets in Jagalchi and Tongyeong. Daegu can feel hot compared with coastal towns, so schedule strenuous outdoor activities for mornings. Expect longer days ideal for exploring the temple complexes around Gyeongju and the mountain trails near Ulsan; bring sun protection and a light rain layer just in case.

Jeolla & Southwest (Gwangju, Mokpo, Suncheon, Boseong)

May is warm and increasingly humid, with long daylight hours ideal for exploring wetlands and coastal drives along the Yellow Sea. Farmers’ markets are full of spring produce, and the mudflats at low tide show rich birdlife. The calm days just before the monsoon make this a busy time - book guesthouses early if planning island trips and bring sun protection and a hat.

Jeju Island (Hallasan, Seogwipo, Jeju City, Udo)

May is warm and often sunny, ideal for coastal drives, Hallasan hikes at lower elevations and visiting botanical gardens. Sea temperatures rise, making Udo and other islets tempting for short trips, though ferries fill quickly on holiday weekends. Expect increasing domestic tourism and pack sun protection alongside a light jacket for breezy cliffside viewpoints.
