South Georgia Museum

The South Georgia Museum is a small museum located at Grytviken on the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. It interprets the island’s whaling history, Antarctic exploration and local natural history.

Exhibits concentrate on the 20th-century whaling station at Grytviken, polar exploration memorabilia and displays related to seal and whale biology. The museum also presents information on notable expeditions connected to the island and includes historic artefacts recovered from the station.

The museum collection grew from objects remaining after the whaling station closed and from materials collected by researchers and expeditioners; it is maintained to document the island’s industrial and exploration past. The site is part of the former Grytviken whaling complex and sits among preserved machinery and buildings from that era.

Grytviken lies on the north coast of South Georgia, set around a protected harbour used historically by whaling ships. The museum is in the settlement area of Grytviken near the cemetery and the anchorages visited by expedition vessels.
