Western Cape (Cape Town & Cape Peninsula)

October is a prime shoulder-season choice for many travelers - blossoms appear in the vineyards, days are mostly warm and dry, and the wind tends to be less than in high summer. This is an excellent time for drives along Chapman’s Peak and for taking the cable car up Table Mountain before the summer crowds arrive. Book accommodation for long weekends early, and bring sunscreen; evenings cool quickly once the sun sets.

Southern Cape & Garden Route (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn)

October is warm and mostly dry, excellent for beach time and forest hikes; garden and coastal blooms are at their best, and the waterways are calm for fishing charters. Safari lodges on the inland margins are pleasant before the heat of summer, and evenings are cool enough for a fire at many guesthouses. Expect higher prices and fuller boat tours as the region warms into summer.

Eastern Cape & Wild Coast (Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth to Coffee Bay)

Warmth increases through October with long daylight and comfortable sea temperatures near the southern stretches, excellent for snorkeling and coastal boat excursions. Holiday bookings begin to firm up toward the end of the month, particularly around famed surf spots, so arrange accommodation early. Expect afternoon breezes and bring sun protection for exposed clifftop walks.

KwaZulu‑Natal & the Drakensberg (Durban, Pietermaritzburg, uKhahlamba/Drakensberg)

October typically features warm, humid days and the first strong thundershowers of the approaching wet season inland; visibility in the mountains can be reduced by afternoon storms, so schedule hikes for the morning. The coast gets busier with spring holidaymakers and surfers chasing breaks around Ballito and Umhlanga. Mosquito levels begin to climb in low-lying areas - carry repellant and check malaria guidance if heading northwards.

Highveld & Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Magaliesberg, Pilanesberg)

October is warmer and increasingly humid with more frequent afternoon buildups that can produce heavy showers and occasional hail; late-day storms start to look more dramatic after clear mornings. The Pilanesberg and Magaliesberg become riotously green, and the dry season for most reserves is still a couple of months away. Keep a lightweight rain jacket and insect repellent handy as the wet season approaches.

Lowveld & Kruger Region (Mbombela/Nelspruit, Hazyview, Kruger National Park)

October grows noticeably hotter and dustier with pre-summer temperatures frequently in the high 20s to low 30s°C; animals may remain near remaining waterholes and shade, making midday sightings less common. Thunderstorm frequency is low but humidity creeps up late in the month, and road maintenance can become active before the rains. Opt for early-morning game drives and carry light, breathable clothing.

Northern Cape & Kalahari (Kimberley, Upington, Namaqualand, Kgalagadi)

October becomes hot and dry as spring ends, with increasing temperature and dust on interior roads; the last of the wildflower displays fade and the landscape becomes more arid. Daytime thermals are strong, so early starts for wildlife photography and dune walks remain best. Heat during mid-day makes long hikes harder-carry water and plan activities for cooler morning or late-afternoon windows.
