South Africa in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Western Cape (Cape Town & Cape Peninsula)

April opens the door to the Cape’s wetter season: temperatures drop into the mid-to-high teens and rainy days become more frequent, especially at night. Autumn colours in Constantia and the vineyards make for pleasant drives and the sea is cooler but still reachable for brave swimmers; pack a layered wardrobe for brisk evenings. Fewer tourists mean easier reservations at popular restaurants, and many coastal hikes are leaf-strewn and less exposed to strong winds.

Southern Cape & Garden Route (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn)

Cooler, wetter conditions begin to arrive in April with autumnal light and fewer crowds; daytime temperatures drop into the mid-to-high teens Celsius and the forested sections look beautifully mellow. This is a great month to explore the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn and to sample late-harvest produce at local markets without the summer crush. Roadside winds and sea swell can make some coastal boat trips choppy, so plan land-based alternatives.

Eastern Cape & Wild Coast (Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth to Coffee Bay)

A noticeable coolness creeps in during April as autumn colours appear in inland valleys and the first brisk evenings arrive, particularly around the Amatola Mountains near East London. Whale watching off the southern parts of the coast begins to pick up, and quieter beaches make for relaxed seaside dining. Rain is less frequent than in the heart of summer, though occasional frontal systems can bring blustery, wet days.

KwaZulu‑Natal & the Drakensberg (Durban, Pietermaritzburg, uKhahlamba/Drakensberg)

April brings crisp mornings on the Drakensberg and more comfortable humidity on the coast; daytime temperatures are pleasant for walking around places such as Howick Falls and the Midlands Meander. Autumn colours begin to show in the higher valleys, and fewer mosquitos make for easier evenings outdoors. It’s an excellent transition month for combining a beach stay in Durban with cooler days in the mountains.

Highveld & Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Magaliesberg, Pilanesberg)

April brings crisp mornings and cooler days, with temperatures falling noticeably compared to summer - the Highveld is pleasant for sightseeing and hiking as the risk of thunderstorms diminishes. Pilanesberg and nearby reserves are dry enough for easier game viewing as animals gather around remaining water sources. Light jackets are recommended for dusk wildlife drives when temperatures drop quickly after sunset.

Lowveld & Kruger Region (Mbombela/Nelspruit, Hazyview, Kruger National Park)

April offers noticeably cooler mornings and drier weather, improving game-viewing as the undergrowth thins and animals concentrate at rivers and pans in Kruger. Daytime highs are comfortable in the mid-to-high 20s°C and evenings grow more pleasant for outdoor dining. Mosquito activity begins to reduce but malaria risk remains - continue repellents and medical guidance.

Northern Cape & Kalahari (Kimberley, Upington, Namaqualand, Kgalagadi)

April cools noticeably with pleasant daytime temperatures ideal for exploring Kimberley’s historical sites and riverfronts; nights are significantly cooler and much more comfortable for camping. The autumn light is excellent for photography in the Kalahari and Vaal regions, and boat trips near the Orange River are enjoyable. Be mindful that services in smaller towns can be limited outside peak summer tourism.
