Visa-Free Entry#
- Who: citizens of the US, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many others.
- Stay: 90 days per entry (some nationalities get 30).
- Extensions: possible through VFS in some circumstances, but slow and not guaranteed.
- Passport: needs two blank pages and at least 30 days’ validity after departure.
Remote Work Visa#
- Who: people employed by a company outside South Africa, working remotely.
- Income: at least R650,976 a year (about $36,000) gross.
- Other documents: employment letter, bank statements, health insurance, police clearance and a medical report.
- Length: up to three years.
- Fees: a Home Affairs fee plus VFS service fees.
- How to apply: online, at a South African embassy or consulate, or through VFS Global. Allow two to three months for processing.
- Tax: holders who stay 183 days or more in a 12-month period must register with SARS (see taxes and money).
Overstays#
Overstaying can lead to being declared “undesirable” and banned from returning for one to five years. Leave before your permitted stay ends.
