South Africa is good value for people earning in strong currencies, and cards work almost everywhere. Long stays need tax planning, because remote work visa holders who stay 183 days must register with SARS. This page explains the position as of October 2026. It is a general guide, not tax advice.
South African Tax Residency#
You can become a South African tax resident by being ordinarily resident (South Africa is your real home), or under the physical presence test: more than 91 days in the current tax year and in each of the previous five, with more than 915 days in total over those five years. Residents are taxed on worldwide income, at rates from 18% to 45%.
Remote Work Visa Holders#
Remote work visa holders who stay 183 days or more in a 12-month period must register with SARS, the South African Revenue Service. Whether they then owe South African tax on their foreign income depends on the residency tests and any tax treaty with their home country. Get advice from a South African tax practitioner.
What It Costs by Base#
These are ballpark monthly costs for one person in a furnished apartment, eating out often, with a coworking desk and a social life.

| Johannesburg | $1,300 | $2,000 | $3,000 |
| Stellenbosch, Garden Route | $1,200 | $1,600 to $2,300 | $3,200+ |
| Durban, Hermanus | $1,100 | $1,500 to $2,100 | $3,000+ |
Rough prices: a flat white R35 to R50, a restaurant main R150 to R250, a bottle of good local wine R100 to R200 in a shop, a coworking day pass R200 to R350, and an Uber across Cape Town R80 to R200.
Paying for Things#
Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere, including at markets. Tipping is expected: about 10% to 15% in restaurants, and small tips for car guards and petrol attendants.
ATMs and Banking#
Use ATMs inside malls or banks for safety, and decline currency conversion. Opening a South African bank account as a foreigner usually needs a visa valid for some months, proof of address and income; remote work visa holders can approach FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank or Capitec. Wise covers most needs until then.
