Honiara & Guadalcanal Coast
Showers taper through April but remain frequent, and the heat can still feel oppressive in the mid-day sun along the beaches near Honiara. This is a good time to explore cultural sites and markets when rain is less likely to strand you - afternoon storms are shorter and less likely to cancel flights than mid-summer downpours. Sea crossings start to calm as the southeast trades begin to shift in, so day trips to nearby islands become easier.
Central Province (Florida Islands, Tulagi, Russell Islands)
Showers gradually lessen through April, and the sheltered channels between the Russell and Florida Islands start to see longer spells of calm sea. This is an increasingly pleasant time for inter-island snorkeling and short village visits as inland tracks firm up, though occasional squalls still appear in the afternoons. Travelers should still expect occasional ferry disruptions but will find more reliable small-boat services than in mid-summer.
Western Province (Gizo, New Georgia, Munda, Marovo Lagoon)
Rainfall starts to ease during April, and the lagoon passages in the Marovo and New Georgia groups begin to see more consistently navigable conditions. This transition is a good time for longer boat charters as operators start to resume fuller schedules; visibility on reef dives improves between showers. Bring sun protection for sudden bright mornings and lightweight rain layers for afternoon squalls when exploring island villages.
Malaita & Savo Coastal Areas
April’s showers lessen in frequency but remain unpredictable; mornings frequently offer clearer windows for exploring while afternoons bring brief, heavy downpours. This is a sensible time to schedule guided visits to coastal communities early in the day and to keep contingency time for travel. Expect reduced mosquito intensity compared with peak wet months, but carry repellent if you plan night walks.
Temotu & Santa Cruz Islands (Tikopia, Anuta, Vanikoro)
By April the frequency of torrential showers tends to lessen slightly, opening up more and longer periods of calm sea in which to visit remote landing sites like Vanikoro. Local communities start to plan more outdoor activities between storms, and some charter operators resume fuller schedules as seas settle. Nonetheless, plan conservatively: flights are rare and boat travel can be cancelled at short notice.
Rennell, Bellona & Makira-Ulawa (Southern islands)
April brings somewhat reduced rain frequency though thunderstorms still occur; the landscape begins to dry marginally between shower periods. This makes trekking and Lake Tegano visits easier than in earlier months but still wetter than in the southern dry season. Arrange boats and guides with lead time, because services can be slow to return to full schedules after the wet season.
