Solentiname Islands
Islands Archipelago in Lake Nicaragua with artist communities
Solentiname in Lake Nicaragua is an archipelago known for a 20th‑century artists’ cooperative, brightly painted wooden churches, canoe trips and abundant freshwater birdlife.
The Solentiname Islands are an archipelago in Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca) in the Río San Juan department of Nicaragua. The islands are small, vegetated, and scattered across the lake rather than oceanic islands.
The archipelago is known for freshwater island ecology, fishing, and a notable rural arts community and cooperative that gained prominence in the 1960s. The islands attract visitors for birdwatching, local crafts and the distinctive painted works produced by the Solentiname artists.
Local history includes indigenous use and later settlement by campesino communities; during the 20th century the islands became better known because of the artist collective and community projects. The islands have been a focus for cultural and small-scale economic activity rather than large-scale development.
Geographically the group sits within Lake Nicaragua toward the southern part of the lake, administratively in Río San Juan Department. Access is by boat across the lake from mainland piers and rivers that feed into the lake.
- Art community: A rural artist community was established on the islands in the 1960s, associated with the Nicaraguan priest and poet Ernesto Cardenal.
