Soleb
Archaeological Site Ancient Egyptian temple with well-preserved reliefs
Soleb in Northern Sudan preserves a New Kingdom temple built under Amenhotep III; tourists visit for sandstone ruins, hieroglyphic inscriptions and Nile-side archaeology.
Soleb is the site of an ancient Egyptian temple in northern Sudan, located on the Nile in what is today the Northern State. The temple complex dates to the reign of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep III in the 14th century BCE and formed part of Egypt’s religious and administrative presence in Nubia.
The surviving ruins include carved stone walls and parts of the temple layout that attest to its New Kingdom origin and ritual function. The site stands near the river in a relatively remote stretch of the Nile valley and is visited by specialists and Nile-route tourists interested in ancient Nubian and Egyptian archaeology.
Construction at Soleb is attributed to the New Kingdom period under Amenhotep III; the temple was part of a network of Egyptian monuments and administrative centers in Nubia and was used for cult and state purposes during Egyptian rule. Over time the site fell out of active use and survives today as archaeological remains exposed on the Nile’s edge.
Geographically the ruins lie on the Nile’s bank in Sudan’s Northern State, in the Nile corridor between the modern settlements along that stretch of the river. The site is accessed from nearby river ports and is set within the arid riverine landscape of the Sudanese Nile valley.
