Sofiiska Square

Sofiiska Square is a public square in central Kyiv immediately adjacent to the St. Sophia Cathedral complex. It sits at the heart of Kyiv’s historic core and is part of the urban ensemble associated with the cathedral.

The square functions as the primary arrival and gathering space for visitors to the cathedral and its museum facilities, and it provides paved pedestrian access to surrounding historical streets. Views from the square emphasize the cathedral exterior and the bell tower, and the area hosts occasional public ceremonies and cultural events.

The square developed around the St. Sophia Cathedral, whose core was constructed in the 11th century and around which Kyiv’s medieval religious and civic life concentrated. Over the centuries the square has been rearranged and restored repeatedly as the cathedral complex was repaired and adapted.

Sofiiska Square sits in the centre of Kyiv’s historic district on the Dnieper’s left-bank historic plateau, immediately west of the cathedral and within walking distance of central government buildings and other Old Kyiv landmarks.
