Skeppsholmen
Island Stockholm island hosting museums and cultural institutions
A small Stockholm islet hosting Moderna Museet, naval museums and waterfront promenades; commonly visited on short museum circuits and for harbor views.
Skeppsholmen is a small island in central Stockholm, Sweden, immediately east of the Old Town and part of the city’s inner archipelago. It has long been associated with maritime and cultural functions and is a prominent cultural quarter today.
A cultural cluster occupies the island - most notably Moderna Museet and the national architecture and design centre, ArkDes, together with galleries and outdoor exhibition spaces. The island’s waterfront and promenades offer clear views across to Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace, and its scale makes it suitable for short visits of a few hours.
The island was used by the Swedish navy from the 17th century and later saw industrial and dockside activity; many of the existing quay buildings and military structures date to that long maritime history. During the 20th century the island transitioned toward cultural uses as museums and institutions moved in.
Skeppsholmen sits between Blasieholmen and Kastellholmen in central Stockholm, connected to the city by pedestrian bridges and close to the Royal Palace and Nationalmuseum. It is within easy walking distance of central Stockholm transport hubs.
- Best viewpoint: Provides one of the clearest views of Stockholm's Old Town and the Royal Palace from the bridge that links the island with Blasieholmen.
- Walkability: Compact island that is easy to walk across in a short visit and is dominated by museums, galleries and waterside promenades.
What to See #
- Moderna Museet: Hosts the national modern art museum and the national centre for architecture and design, both located in converted 20th-century dockside buildings and drawing most cultural visitors to the island.
- ArkDes (Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design): Serves as the base for ArkDes, Sweden's national centre for architecture and design, which shares the island's cultural quarter with other institutions.
- Former naval installations: Contains former naval buildings and quays used by the Swedish navy from the 17th century; several historic dockside structures remain visible around the island.
How to Get to Skeppsholmen #
Skeppsholmen is a small island in central Stockholm connected to the city by bridges from Blasieholmen and Djurgården. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from T‑Centralen/Stockholm Central; several inner‑city bus routes serve the nearby stops and seasonal ferry services (Djurgården ferries) call at piers close to the island. Once on the island most sights are within a short walking distance from the bridge or ferry landing.
Tips for Visiting Skeppsholmen #
- Visit Skeppsholmen early in the morning or later in the afternoon to enjoy the museums (Moderna Museet, ArkDes) with fewer crowds and pleasant harbour views across to Gamla Stan.
- Approach on foot across Skeppsholmsbron from the city centre rather than by car-this gives one of Stockholm's best harbour panoramas and places you within easy walking distance of the island's galleries.
- Many visitors miss the island's quieter northern tip and waterfront sculptures; spend time walking the perimeter for different views toward the Royal Palace and City Hall instead of only the main museum spaces.
