Sir John Soane’s Museum occupies the architect Sir John Soane’s former home at 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London and contains his collection of art, architectural models, drawings, and antiquities. Soane bequeathed the house and its contents to the nation at his death in 1837, with a legal trust to preserve the rooms unchanged.

Visitors encounter compact, densely furnished rooms arranged to demonstrate Soane’s approach to light and space, including display cases, paintings, and classical fragments placed to create deliberate visual effects. The collection includes architectural models and drawings, decorative arts, and antiquities that Soane assembled during his career.

Soane developed and refitted the house across his lifetime as both a domestic space and a working architect’s studio; after his death the property was preserved under the terms of his will and opened to the public as a museum. The rooms remain an important resource for the study of Georgian and Regency architecture and collecting practices.

The museum sits on the western edge of Holborn near Lincoln’s Inn Fields in central London, a short walk from Holborn and Covent Garden transport links.

The museum address is on Lincoln’s Inn Fields, just off High Holborn.

By car from central London (Charing Cross) it’s roughly 1.5-2 km (about 1-1.5 miles); approach via High Holborn/Chancery Lane (A40/A401). Street parking is limited - expect to use paid bays or nearby car parks.

• Book a free timed entry slot on the museum website before you go - the house is small and visits are by timed ticket, so advance booking avoids long waits.
• Use the main entrance on Lincoln's Inn Fields (the museum is the former Soane house) and plan for a compact visit of about an hour so you can move through the tight rooms without blocking others.
• Visit in the late afternoon (toward the end of the last entry slot) when guided groups are fewer; make sure to spend extra time in the Picture Room and the top-lit model/gallery level, which many visitors breeze past.
