Sippar Archaeological Site

Sippar is an ancient Mesopotamian city on the banks of the Euphrates, known in antiquity as a major cult centre for the sun god Shamash and for its long sequence of occupation from the early third millennium BCE. It is a significant archaeological site because of its temples and large quantities of written records.

Archaeological work at the site has exposed temple structures, city walls and large archival deposits of cuneiform tablets that document administrative, legal and literary activity across millennia. The principal temple complex, traditionally called E-babbar, was central to the city’s religious life and appears frequently in ancient texts.

Textual and material evidence show that Sippar played an active role in Early Dynastic, Akkadian and Old Babylonian periods and continued in later Mesopotamian history. Excavations and surface finds have made it a key source for scholars studying ancient Near Eastern administration and religion.

The site is located in central Iraq within the area of the ancient Euphrates floodplain; its remains are identified with a tell in the region of modern Baghdad governorate.

• Tablet finds: Extensive cuneiform tablets from Sippar were excavated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and are now held in several international museum collections.

• E-babbar temple: Temple E-babbar, the main sanctuary dedicated to the sun god Shamash, attested in textual sources and excavated remains on the site.
• City tells and archives: Archaeological tells and city remains that have produced large numbers of cuneiform tablets and administrative records from the third millennium BCE onward.

• Treat Sippar (Tell Abu Habbah) as a specialist archaeological visit: check current security and access conditions and arrange entry through a reputable local fixer or guide-independent visits are generally not advisable.
• Expect minimal visitor infrastructure on site and plan logistics (transport, permissions, local contacts) in advance; because Sippar is an active archaeological area, visiting hours and access can change depending on ongoing work or local restrictions.
