Simonopetra (Simonopetrah) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery on the Mount Athos peninsula in northern Greece, built on a prominent rock face above the Aegean Sea. The community traces its foundation to the 13th century and is one of the well-known Athonite monasteries.

Buildings are stacked on narrow terraces and linked by steep steps and galleries, producing a compact complex of cells, refectories and chapels that cling to the cliff. The monastery contains ecclesiastical treasures, icons and communal monastic spaces used by the resident brotherhood.

Historical records attribute the foundation to Saint Simon in the 13th century; the complex has been rebuilt and repaired several times after fires and structural collapses, retaining Byzantine liturgical practice. It remains an active male monastic community under the jurisdiction of the Mount Athos monastic republic.

Simonopetra sits on the southern coast of the Mount Athos peninsula on the Aegean, reached via the port of Dafni and the Mount Athos entry procedures; vessels call at nearby sketes and monastery landings.

  • Access restrictions: Perched on a steep cliff on the southern side of the Mount Athos peninsula, access to the monastery is restricted to male pilgrims through the Mount Athos entry system.
  • Founding and architecture: Founded in the 13th century by a monk named Simon, the monastery is known for its distinctive cliffside position and Byzantine monastic architecture.

How to Get to Simonopetra monastery #

Simonopetra Monastery is on the Athos peninsula and can only be visited by men with a special permit (diamonitirion) issued by the Mount Athos Pilgrims’ Office. Permitted visitors travel to Ouranoupoli (Chalkidiki) and then take the regular passenger boats that serve monasteries on the Athos coast; these boats call at monastery landings and disembark passengers a short walk up to each monastery. You must obtain the permit in advance and use the authorized boat services from Ouranoupoli (or other authorized ports).

Tips for Visiting Simonopetra monastery #

  • Remember Mount Athos is accessible only to men and requires a special permit (a diamonitirion) issued through the Pilgrims' Bureau-apply well in advance and carry the document on arrival.
  • Check the daily boat timetables from Ouranoupoli or Ierissos before you travel-monastery visits depend on the monastery's opening times and limited landing spots, so plan arrivals to coincide with scheduled boats.
  • Respect the monastery's visiting rules and quiet zones; Simonopetra sits on a steep cliff-allow time to view it from the quay and nearby viewpoints rather than expecting lengthy on‑site tours.
