Simonopetra monastery

Simonopetra (Simonopetrah) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery on the Mount Athos peninsula in northern Greece, built on a prominent rock face above the Aegean Sea. The community traces its foundation to the 13th century and is one of the well-known Athonite monasteries.

Buildings are stacked on narrow terraces and linked by steep steps and galleries, producing a compact complex of cells, refectories and chapels that cling to the cliff. The monastery contains ecclesiastical treasures, icons and communal monastic spaces used by the resident brotherhood.

Historical records attribute the foundation to Saint Simon in the 13th century; the complex has been rebuilt and repaired several times after fires and structural collapses, retaining Byzantine liturgical practice. It remains an active male monastic community under the jurisdiction of the Mount Athos monastic republic.

Simonopetra sits on the southern coast of the Mount Athos peninsula on the Aegean, reached via the port of Dafni and the Mount Athos entry procedures; vessels call at nearby sketes and monastery landings.
