Freetown Peninsula & Western Area (Freetown, Lungi, Cotton Tree)

May marks the start of the long rainy season across the entire peninsula; rainfall becomes more frequent and roads into the hills can become treacherous after heavy storms. Freetown’s orographic lift often produces stronger, localized showers on the western slopes, so hikes in the hills (like to the Cotton Tree viewpoints) will be muddy and slippery. Tourism thins out, making it easier to find quiet guesthouses, but plan for interrupted ferry services and occasional short power outages.

Coastal Lowlands & Islands (Lumley, Banana Island, Bonthe, Turtle Islands)

May ushers in the wet season: rainfall picks up and daily showers become common, though there will still be windows of sunshine for shorter outings to Banana Island or the Turtle Islands. Roads to some coastal villages can become muddy and small local boats are more likely to be cancelled on rough days. For turtle-nesting watchers, conditions start improving; check local guides for safe beach access and expect reduced crowds.

Southern Rainforest & Lowlands (Bo, Bonthe, Tiwai Island, Gbangbatoke)

May marks the start of the main rainy season and the southern rainforests turn deeply green; trails on Tiwai Island and around Gola are often muddy and sometimes impassable after heavy storms. River travel becomes the reliable alternative to roads, but ferries and canoes can be limited on stormy days. Wildlife viewing is excellent because animals gather at remaining dry patches; however, mosquitoes and biting flies increase markedly, so bring repellents and treated nets.

Eastern Highlands & Kono (Mount Bintumani, Koidu, Gola Hills)

May is the onset of the wet season in the highlands: steady rains and mist often drape the upper slopes, creating dramatic cloud forests in the Gola area but leaving trails muddy and sometimes hazardous. Koidu’s road links may deteriorate, and expect slower drives to trailheads; river crossings are more challenging and should be done with local knowledge. For photographers and botanists, the cloud forest in full leaf is rewarding, though travel comfort decreases.

Northern Plains & Savanna (Makeni, Port Loko hinterland, Karene)

May marks the start of the rainy season in the north: storms become regular and quickly green the savanna, though rainfall is usually less intense than in the south and on the peninsula. Rivers rise but rarely flood extensively here; some secondary roads may become soft and slow. For photographers, the first flush of green is dramatic; for travelers, be ready for occasional travel delays and pack a waterproof outer layer.
