Shrine of the Book
Museum Museum in Jerusalem housing the Dead Sea Scrolls
A dedicated museum hall at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem that houses the Dead Sea Scrolls; notable for its white-domed building and Second Temple archaeology displays.
The Shrine of the Book is a museum building on the grounds of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem built to house and display the Dead Sea Scrolls and related manuscripts. Its distinctive white dome and contrasting black basalt wall form a symbolic architectural composition linked to the exhibits inside.
The internal galleries contain the original scrolls and high-quality reproductions, display cases with textual fragments, and interpretive material about the scrolls’ history and significance. Visitor circulation is arranged to protect the fragile manuscripts while allowing close study of key fragments.
The building and its conservation facilities were commissioned in the mid 20th century specifically for the Dead Sea Scrolls and have been modified over time to meet evolving conservation standards and exhibition needs. The institution manages secure, climate-controlled display and rotates items to preserve the originals.
The Shrine of the Book sits within the Israel Museum complex on the western side of Jerusalem’s central cultural district, near the Knesset and other civic institutions. It is accessed from the museum entrance and forms part of standard museum visits.
- Rotating exhibits: Original Dead Sea Scrolls are exhibited on a rotating basis and conservation needs mean different manuscripts are shown at different times.
- Visitor restrictions: Photography restrictions and controlled lighting are used to protect the manuscripts, so exhibit conditions are dim and flash photography is generally not permitted.
What to See #
- Shrine chamber: The domed enclosure that houses the scrolls, designed with a white curved roof and protective climate control to preserve ancient manuscripts.
- Basalt wall and approach: A low black basalt wall that forms part of the exterior composition of the building and contrasts with the dome; this design element is integral to the building's symbolic layout.
