Why Visit Shouson Hill? #

A leafy hillside neighborhood on Hong Kong Island offering unusually quiet streets and sweeping views of the South China Sea. Hikers and residents prize its steep sections of the Hong Kong Trail that thread past colonial-era villas and private gardens, while a short hop brings you to Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay for sandy beaches and seafood dining. Mornings of tai chi in small parks and the area’s relaxed, residential character make it appealing to travelers who want calm without sacrificing easy access to central Hong Kong.

Best Time to Visit Shouson Hill #

Shouson Hill is best in autumn (late September-November) when humidity drops and skies clear; spring is pleasant but can be hazy. Avoid the hot, stormy summer months unless you like humid heat and occasional typhoons.

Summer
June - August · 26-33 °C (79-91 °F)
Hot, sticky, and storm-prone; afternoons bring heavy rain and thunder. Outdoor hikes are sweaty but still possible early mornings; expect crowded beaches on rare clear days.
Autumn
September - November · 20-28 °C (68-82 °F)
My favorite season here: comfortable, clear, breezy weather ideal for harbor views, trails, and outdoor dining. Expect fewer rain interruptions and pleasant evenings.
Winter
December - February · 12-18 °C (54-64 °F)
Mild and dry with crisp air; great for long walks and city sightseeing. Nights can be cool, so bring a light jacket for evening harbour strolls.

How to Get to Shouson Hill

Shouson Hill is on Hong Kong Island's southern shore; most visitors arrive via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and then use Airport Express plus MTR and a short bus/taxi. The South Island Line plus buses/minibuses or a taxi from Admiralty/Central work best for the final leg.

By Air

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG): HKG is the main international airport. The Airport Express runs to Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes (Adult fare HK$115 one-way) and to Kowloon (Kowloon Station) in about 21 minutes (HK$105). From those hubs take a taxi (to Shouson Hill expect HK$60-100 and 15-25 minutes from Central/Admiralty) or transfer to buses/minibuses on Hong Kong Island.

Macau International Airport (MFM): Macau is an alternate arrival point for some low-cost or regional flights; getting to Hong Kong requires a ferry or cross-boundary coach plus onward transfer to the south side of Hong Kong Island, making it a less convenient route to Shouson Hill for most travelers.

By Train & Bus

Train (MTR): Take the Airport Express to Hong Kong or Kowloon then use the MTR network. To get to Shouson Hill, ride the Island Line to Admiralty or take the South Island Line to Wong Chuk Hang/Ocean Park and then transfer to buses or minibuses that serve Repulse Bay / Deep Water Bay / Shouson Hill areas. Overall rail plus bus transfers take ~35-60 minutes from the airport (including the Airport Express leg).

Bus / Minibus: From Central, public buses to Repulse Bay and Stanley (e.g., Citybus route 6) run frequently and take about 25-40 minutes, depending on traffic; minibuses run more directly to some hillside stops near Shouson Hill. A single-deck bus fare on Hong Kong Island is typically HK$5-HK$20 depending on distance and exact route.

How to Get Around Shouson Hill #

Shouson Hill is a residential hillside neighborhood where short walks and stairways are common; steep slopes make it best for people comfortable with hills. Buses and minibuses connect the area to Aberdeen, Wong Chuk Hang and Central; taxis are plentiful across Hong Kong. The nearest MTR stations require a short bus or taxi ride. Allow extra time for transfers, and be prepared for narrow, hilly streets when walking.
