Shlisselburg
Archaeological Site Historic Russian town with Oreshek fortress on island
Fortress town at the head of the Neva where Lake Ladoga narrows, centered on the Oreshek (Shlisselburg) Fortress. Visitors take river cruises from St. Petersburg and tour historic fortifications.
Shlisselburg is a town at the outlet of the Neva River on the shores of Lake Ladoga, administratively associated with the St. Petersburg region. Its principal historic monument is the island fortress commonly called Oreshek or Shlisselburg Fortress, founded by the Novgorod Republic in the early 14th century.
The fortress occupies a strategic island position at the lake’s northern edge and has medieval foundations with later masonry fortifications and a museum that interprets its history. The site has served military, penal and symbolic roles at different times and contains visible layers of medieval and post-medieval defensive works.
Founded by Novgorod in 1323 as a defensive stronghold, the fortress passed through Swedish, Russian and imperial hands and was repeatedly rebuilt and upgraded. It was used as a state prison in later centuries and saw military action and siege operations during several conflicts, including the Second World War.
Shlisselburg lies at the head of the Neva where the river issues from Lake Ladoga, roughly 30-40 kilometres east of St. Petersburg by road. The surrounding landscape is lake-dominated with river channels and low-lying shorelines.
- Strategic island position: The fortress sits on an island at the source of the Neva where the river flows out of Lake Ladoga; it has been rebuilt and fortified over many centuries.
- Proximity to St. Petersburg: The town and fortress are about 35 kilometres east of central St. Petersburg and are accessible by road and seasonal boat services from the lake and river.
