Oreshek Fortress is a medieval fortification located on an island at the source of the Neva River on Lake Ladoga in Leningrad Oblast, Russia; it dates back to the early 14th century.
The fortress displays concentric stone and earthen fortifications, multiple towers and preserved interior buildings spanning medieval and later periods. Visitors tour the island fortifications, exhibition rooms and walk the ramparts to view the Neva and Lake Ladoga waterways.
The stronghold was founded in 1323 by the Novgorod Republic and later contested by Swedish and Russian forces; it served military and defensive roles across centuries and was used as a high-security prison in later periods. The fortress also figured in 20th-century conflicts around Leningrad.
The structure sits on Orekhovy Island at the head of the Neva River where it issues from Lake Ladoga, reached by boat from the nearby town of Shlisselburg east of Saint Petersburg.
- Access: Access is by short boat trip from the town of Shlisselburg; the island location makes it an exposed but compact site for a single-visit itinerary.

- Buy tickets and check the museum's seasonal schedule in advance: the island museum and guided interiors operate on a summer timetable and crossings can be reduced or suspended in shoulder seasons and bad weather.
