Shaolin Monastery
Religious Site Historic Chinese monastery famed for Shaolin martial arts
A Buddhist monastery in Henan province famed as the historical home of Shaolin kung fu. Tourists attend martial-arts demonstrations, visit temple complexes, and watch trained monks and schools practice.
Shaolin Monastery is a historic Buddhist temple on the slopes of Mount Song in Henan province, China, traditionally founded in the late 5th century (commonly cited as 495 CE). It is widely known as the birthplace of Shaolin kung fu and as an important center of Chan (Zen) Buddhism.
The complex includes the main temple halls, monastic living quarters and the nearby Pagoda Forest containing hundreds of funerary pagodas. Martial arts training schools and demonstration areas attract tourists and students interested in Chinese martial arts; scheduled demonstrations are a regular feature for visitors.
Historically the monastery was established as a Buddhist center in the Northern Wei period and later became associated with martial practices; it has been damaged and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries, including significant destruction in the 20th century followed by restoration and conservation efforts. The modern site combines functioning religious practice with cultural tourism and training schools.
The monastery sits on the southern slopes of Mount Song near the county-level city of Dengfeng in Henan province, within a UNESCO World Heritage cluster of historic sites on Mount Song. The nearest major urban center is Zhengzhou to the north.
- Pagoda Forest: The Pagoda Forest contains hundreds of funerary pagodas for monks and abbots dating from Tang to Qing dynasties, and is a distinctive archaeological and visual feature of the complex.
- Martial arts demonstrations: Daily kung fu demonstrations and short-term training programs are widely available; many visitors attend scheduled demonstrations rather than extended courses.
