Song Shan
Mountain One of China's Five Sacred Mountains, Shaolin nearby
Mount Song in Henan hosts the Shaolin Temple and climbing trails; visitors come for martial-arts history, ancient pagodas and steep forested paths.
Mount Song (Song Shan) is the central one of China’s Five Great Mountains, located in Henan province near the county-level city of Dengfeng. The area is a major religious and cultural landscape with ancient Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian sites and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
The mountain area contains several high-profile historic sites, notably the Shaolin Temple and the Songyue Pagoda; the pagoda dates to 523 AD and the temple is traditionally dated to the late 5th century. Trails and stone stairways link monasteries, grottoes and temples across the lower and middle slopes, and the site remains a center for religious practice and martial-arts demonstrations.
Religious complexes and monuments on Mount Song developed over many centuries. Monasteries, temples and academies were established or expanded from the medieval period onward; several structures and the broader Dengfeng historic ensemble were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 for their long-standing cultural and religious importance.
Mount Song sits in central Henan province within the administrative area of Dengfeng, under Zhengzhou prefecture. The mountain range rises above surrounding plains and forms a compact cultural landscape of temples and historic monuments.
- Shaolin founding: Founded around the late 5th century, the Shaolin Temple is a major center for Chan Buddhism and traditional martial arts training.
- Early pagoda: The Songyue Pagoda dates to 523 AD and is a rare early brick pagoda with a polygonal plan, located on the mountain slopes.
What to See #
- Shaolin Temple: A Chan Buddhist monastery traditionally dated to around 495 AD and closely associated with Chinese martial arts and Shaolin kung fu. The complex includes multiple halls, training courtyards and historic inscriptions and remains an active temple with monks and martial-arts training.
- Songyue Pagoda: A brick pagoda on Mount Song constructed in 523 AD; notable as one of the earliest extant Chinese brick pagodas and for its multilateral (polygonal) plan.
