Archaeological Site 18th-century Maratha fort-palace, former Peshwa residence
Built as the Peshwa seat in 18th-century Pune, Shaniwar Wada offers ruined ramparts, a surviving gate and gardens; visitors study Maratha history and catch evening sound-and-light shows.
Shaniwar Wada is an 18th-century fortified palace complex in Pune, Maharashtra, built as the ceremonial and administrative seat of the Maratha Peshwas. Construction began around 1730 and it became the centre of Peshwa power.
The site is visited for its surviving massive stone gateways and ruined palace foundations that outline the original fortified complex, along with restored gardens and interpretive displays. Key visible features include the principal gate and the remains of audience halls where the Peshwas held court.
Built in the early 1730s under the patronage of Peshwa Bajirao I’s administration, the complex served as the political and residential centre of the Peshwas until the early 19th century. A large fire in 1828 destroyed much of the wooden superstructure, leaving stone walls and gateways that form the present ruins.
