Shanidar Cave
Cave Paleolithic archaeological cave with Neanderthal remains
In the Zagros foothills, Shanidar Cave is an archaeological site with Neanderthal remains and evidence used in studies of prehistoric burial practices; visits focus on paleolithic research and mountain views.
Shanidar Cave is a rock shelter in the Zagros Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan known for Middle and Upper Palaeolithic human remains, including multiple Neanderthal skeletons. Excavations in the mid-20th century made the site internationally important for studies of Neanderthal behaviour and burial.
The locus of interest is a sheltered cave mouth with visible rock exposures and the mapped excavation area where remains and artefacts were recorded. Interpretive material associated with the site discusses the Neanderthal finds, associated fauna and the stratigraphic sequence revealed by the digs.
The site is primarily of archaeological and scientific interest rather than a developed tourist attraction, and visits are typically brief and focused on the shelter and landscape context.
Professional excavations led by Ralph Solecki in the 1950s and 1960s recovered several Neanderthal skeletons, some interpreted as showing deliberate burial and evidence for complex behaviour. Subsequent work and analysis have continued to examine the age and interpretation of the finds.
The cave is located on a hillside in the Zagros mountain range within Erbil Governorate in northern Iraq, in a rural upland landscape.
- Key research: Excavations led by Ralph Solecki in the 1950s and 1960s uncovered multiple Neanderthal skeletons and evidence interpreted as intentional burials, making the site important for Palaeolithic studies.
What to See #
- Excavation Shelter: The main rock shelter with exposed deposits and the mapped excavation area where multiple Neanderthal skeletons were uncovered during mid-20th-century fieldwork.
- Surrounding Cave Network: Surrounding talus slopes and caves in the Zagros foothills that form the broader archaeological landscape of the site.
Tips for Visiting Shanidar Cave #
- Plan visits in spring or early autumn when mountain access is most reliable and weather is stable; avoid heavy winter snow and peak-summer dust and heat.
- Use a local driver or guide familiar with rural dirt roads - the turnoff and final approach can be rough, and guides also explain the excavations and context that casual visitors miss.
- Allow time to take in the valley views from the cave area and to read the onsite interpretation or have your guide summarise the Solecki excavations - many visitors hurry to the site but miss the wider landscape context important for understanding the burials.
Best Time to Visit Shanidar Cave #
Best visited in late spring or early autumn when mountain-foothill conditions are mild and access is easiest.
