Citadel of Erbil Archaeological Site

The Citadel of Erbil is an ancient fortified mound at the historic centre of Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, notable as one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlement sites in the world. The citadel dominates the city skyline and is a major archaeological and cultural landmark.

A compact elevated mound containing narrow streets, historic houses and defensive structures that reflect many periods of occupation; some restored houses and exhibition spaces present the citadel’s urban history. The surrounding lower bazaar area and city fabric integrate the citadel into the living urban centre.

Occupied for several millennia, the citadel developed through successive civilizations and was used as an administrative and residential centre over long historical periods. In the 20th and 21st centuries the site underwent evacuation and conservation work to stabilise and restore buildings and to present the archaeological sequence.

Sitting at the heart of modern Erbil, the citadel occupies a raised tell in the city centre and is readily visible from surrounding districts.

The Citadel (Erbil Qalat) sits in the historic centre of Erbil (on the tell/mound in the old town) and is within walking distance of the surrounding bazaars and city centre streets. Erbil has limited formal local rail; most visitors reach the citadel by taxi or local minibus from across the city - if you arrive at the central bus or taxi hubs you can usually get a short taxi ride into the citadel area.

• Visit in the cooler early morning or late afternoon for better light and fewer visitors; the Citadel's elevated position gives best views at these times.
• Check with the Erbil Citadel visitor centre for current opening hours and any guided tours or temporary exhibitions - the restored houses and on-site displays are best seen with local context.
• Walk the perimeter to take in city views from different sides; many visitors focus only on the central mound and miss the external viewpoints and nearby revitalised streets.
